General

Upper Nazareth Township is divided into nine Zones for the purpose of snow removal and road maintenance. Emphasis will be placed upon removal of snow from areas that are important for the Safety and Welfare of the residents of Upper Nazareth Township and designated Snow Emergency Routes.

Public Works currently has five vehicles designated for snow removal, ranging from pickup trucks to 9 ton dump trucks. Salting and cindering will utilize five vehicles, one small and one mid size dump truck and two 9 ton dump trucks with the pickup truck being utilized to salt and cinder the public walkways in our parks and around the municipal building.

Upper Nazareth township Police shall reserve the right to notify the Department of Public Works Supervisor at any time they feel necessary to implement the snow Removal Plan in order to ensure the safety and welfare of the citizens and visitors of Upper Nazareth Township.

 

Snow Removal Shall fall under one of the following categories:

1. Salting/cindering
2. Normal snow removal
3. Snow emergency

Procedures:

1. Salting/cindering
   • priority will be given to snow emergency routes, vicinity around Police and Fire stations, and roadways with special hazards to include steep grades and sharp curves.
   • extra care will be given to road intersections and stop intersections and stop intersections along with school bus routes.
   • material used for salting and cindering purposes is a mixture that requires vehicular traffic to be most effective
   • while most salting and cindering will be done in the least traveled times, their desired effect may not be visible until early morning rush hour. Although the effects are not visible, the anti skid capability is still present.
2. Normal Snow Removal
   • priority will be given to snow emergency routes and the vicinity around Police and Fire stations.
   • backhoe and dump trucks will be used to remove snow piles from intersections or locations that interfere with public safety as deemed necessary by the Upper Nazareth Township Police Department or Public Works Supervisor.
3. Snow Emergency
   • every effort will be made to provide for continuous snow removal from snow emergency routes and areas necessary for the safety and welfare of the public.
   • if snow removal during a declared snow emergency is beyond the capabilities of the Upper Nazareth Township Public Works Department, the Upper Nazareth Township Public Works Supervisor shall begin acquisition of additional necessary resources through private contractors.
